Noah Dow and two companies under his control, ABC Company and XYZ Company from Wyoming, are requesting that the court recognize their ownership of 39,000 inactive BTC addresses. The claimants assert that these inactive wallets were legally "abandoned" property that they discovered. These include the wallets of early BTC miners and addresses attributed to the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. Even if the court rules in favor of the claimant, it would be only a formal step. The Bitcoin network has no mechanism for "redistributing" funds without a private key. However, if these coins end up on exchanges, the court could require their transfer. Moreover, a significant portion of these BTC belongs to deceased owners and those who have lost their access keys.
