House Agriculture Committee leaders Glenn Thompson (R) and Angie Craig (D) have stated that the agency needs all five commissioners. They cited an increased workload due to expanded responsibilities in the crypto-assets sphere. Since December 2025, Chairman Michael Selig has remained the only acting commissioner. Currently, the law does not mandate filling all seats, but it prohibits more than three members from one party. Senator Amy Klobuchar proposed an amendment to the Clarity Act, which would freeze new CFTC rules until at least four commissioners are appointed. The White House is considering a bipartisan list of candidates. Representing the Democrats are market makers Matt McKenzie (Optiver) and Ari Officer (Jump Trading). On the Republican side, Nathan Anonik (Senate Agriculture Committee) and Chelsea Pizzola from the cryptocurrency-focused law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher are under consideration.
